What We've Done

Mood Strings - Barbican

We were commissioned by the Barbican to create a distinctive, interactive and beautiful data capture which would best represent the ‘mood’ of Walthamstow throughout their annual festival, Walthamstow Garden Party, by co-creating a visual art installation with attendees. As well as serving as an attractive piece which could read the vibe of the festival as a type of 'live graph', the Mood Strings allowed us to understand and reflect on who was attending the festival by capturing their age, ethnicity, area and how culturally engaged they are usually. The piece was interactive, first asking people to choose the word that best associated with their mood (pink = happy and blue = chilled, for example) and taking the matching ball of string. We then took them through the installation, asking them to hook their string on to the correct hook depending on their answers. Finally, we asked how we could improve their mood in future, giving them a luggage tag to write, draw or scribble on before adding it to their string to capture deeper qualitative insight.

“IT HAS BEEN A REAL PLEASURE TO WORK WITH THE DOINK TEAM FROM INITIAL CONSULTATION THROUGH TO DELIVERY AND EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT, THEY BROUGHT CREATIVITY, INNOVATION AND POSITIVITY, WHICH RESULTED IN A PROJECT THAT RESPONDED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL TO OUR BRIEF AND WAS RECEIVED AND ENGAGED WITH ENTHUSIASTICALLY BY STAFF AND PUBLIC ALIKE. EXCELLENT COMMUNICATORS THROUGHOUT, DOINK MET AND EXCEEDED OUR EXPECTATIONS AT EACH STAGE OF THE PROCESS. WE LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH THEM AGAIN IN THE NEAR FUTURE!”
