REMEMBERING SREBRENICA MEMORIAL DAY

This event forms part of an historic programme of memorials being held across the UK between 6-13 July 2015 and will be attended by distinguished political, religious and community leaders. The event is being held in collaboration between the charitable organisation Remembering Srebrenica and Birmingham City Council.

Srebrenica was the biggest war crime to take place in Europe since the end of the Second World War, and a European Parliament resolution in 2009 called for the institutionalisation of the 11th day of July as a day of remembrance by each member state.

Srebrenica Memorial Day honours the victims and survivors of the genocide.  It offers a unique opportunity to remember the lives lost in Srebrenica, to highlight the continued consequences of genocide, and to reaffirm our own commitment to strong community relations here in the UK.  It is through these powerful messages that we are all able to strengthen our resolve and send out a message to all those attempting to create divisions within our societies. Your presence, therefore, is important and I do hope that you will accept my invitation to attend this historic event.  I note this falls within Ramadan but the event is being held within national remembrance dates.

Please kindly confirm your attendance by email to pam.hepburn@birmingham.gov.uk by 1 July 2015.
