Your gloriously long summer holiday is just around the corner, but first you must get through the long list of dreaded deadlines. As someone who is about to complete their final year in education, I know how important it is for young people to take care of their mental wellbeing, particularly during exam season. I am not a stranger to pre-assessment butterflies and the occasional panic the night before a deadline. Here's my advice to those that are finding this time difficult, and if you are struggling, please know that you are not alone.
1. Although it doesn't seem like it now, exam results aren't the end of the world
Whatever happens in your exams, and whatever grades you get, you can still have a successful life and work towards the career of your dreams. Employers rarely look at your grades, and are far more interested in your attitude, experience and relevant skills. Your exam grades don’t define you, and they also shouldn’t affect how you view your previous achievements. Although, I have to remind myself about often.
2. Try to stay organised during this busy time
Figure out a schedule of things you need to do, and spread things out over time so that they feel more manageable. Many people find short sharp bursts of work are more productive than trying to cram eight hours of revision into one day (or night). It’s not all about the work though. Everyone needs a break, and once you’ve got yourself organised, you can schedule in breaks for fun and relaxation. Make sure that you give yourself plenty of free time to unwind, it's just as important as your revision.
3. Stress isn't always a bad thing – small amounts can boost your productivity
If you are struggling to cope, make sure you talk to someone about it. Being a student can be really tough, and your school/college/university has a duty of care to support you. Talking about how you are feeling gets it out of your system, and you may even discover some practical strategies to deal with the stress. Remember that the exams will eventually come to an end, and after each exam, you are one step closer towards that gloriously long summer holiday.
Don’t stress. Do your best. Forget the rest.
